Everyone from KWC Organization wants to send their greetings to all of you, please have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
For this holiday season we would like to share a story with you, that we think might inspire and motivate you for 2011.
It is a story about two World Champions from the freezing cold of the Nordics. It is a story about Maria Saarimaa-Ylitalo and Sam Moudden.
Both of them are no strangers to Karaoke World Championships. Maria competed representing Finland in 2004 and 2005, Sam represented Morocco in 2008 and 2009. Both of them came close to success, but only reached the top 5. In 2010 Maria and Sam decided to have one last go at it, since KWC Organization limits the times one can compete (representing one nation, of which he or she has citizenship) to three.
Actually, for Maria the story is a bit more complicated. As a “veteran” of Karaoke World Championships, she was originally asked to be a judge in the Finnnish KWC Trial tour by KWC Organization’s Stage Manager (Joonas Laaksonen) and Technical Engineer (Tommi Aaltonen) and at first she agreed. However, a bit later she decided that she has to do this one more time and because acting as a judge even at the first level of national trials would have disqualified her from the whole competition, Maria kindly informed Jonas and Tommi that she will be judged, instead of being a judge. Naturally the guys were sad that they just had lost a very capable judge, but were even more happier since Finland got an amazingly potential female singer to the Trial tour.
Sam’s first steps of the journey was at least as vivid as Maria’s. He had represented Morocco, his birthcountry, for the past two years and now with the brand new Finland’s citizenship (he moved to Finland in the early 2000′s) he decided to give it a try in the far more difficult Finnish Trials. As per to his artistic persona, Sam took part in the last first level trials in the Helsinki region and did not make it to the next level. We at KWC Organization got a worried call from Sam asking us what he might have done wrong and is the any chance still to get to the next level. We advised Sam to travel to Kouvola (200 kilometers from Helsinki), where the LAST first level trial of the YEAR was being held, TOMORROW.
Well, Sam got there alright and made it to the next level, the regional finals. When he went back to Kouvola for the regionals a month later, he was about 20 seconds away from being disqualified because the Technical Engineer for the Finnish Trials, Arto Haaja, was about to start the competition and Sam was extremely late because the train he took from Helsinki to Kouvola had to stop for an hour because of the railway was being repaired along the way. Just as Arto was about the grab the mic and announce the first singer, Sam came storming through the door and was able to enter the days competition.
We’d like to say that the rest is history, but there is still more; Maria and her husband had long dreamt of a child, and guess what? Early 2011 There will be one new member to the next generation of karaoke singers in Finland! The little guy or girl was with Maria all the way through her Finnish Finals triumph and the trip to Moscow!
We hope that this small Christmas story will serve as an inspiration to all the singers throughout the world! Never give up and always try your best.
Best regards,
Atte Hujanen
